What Is AEO and Why Should You Care?

As a Search Engine Optimization Specialist in an industry that has many rapid changes happening all at once, I can say that the manner in which we searched in the past is no longer the same today.

In fact, search is changing faster than most people realize and I know that in some way or another you’ve noticed it.

No?

Ok try this.

Try doing a search.

Are you still clicking through a number of websites to find what you’re looking for or are you just depending on the results on the earch results page?

Yeah, the one that’s pulled from all places by AI.

Information  from a dozen sources summarized into one neat package.

How often do you move on after that?

Or do you just take that information and run with it?

That’s Answer Engine Optimization in a nutshell.

And AEO is a new practice of writing content in a way that makes it easy for AI-powered answer engines, think Google AI Mode, Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, to extract your information, trust it, and use it as a source in their synthesized responses.

How is it Different from Traditional SEO?

Traditional SEO was about getting someone to click on your link.

AEO is about getting your content cited even when nobody clicks.

The goal shifts from ranking to being referenced.

From driving traffic to your website to becoming a trusted source that AI systems pull from when assembling answers.

At first it seems like you’re losing something because that’s the one thing we worked so hard for to get right?

Traffic.

But if you look more closely, being cited by an AI answering millions of queries is a different kind of traffic.

Now you’re no longer relying on a person doing a search and deciding if your website is worth clicking on. Now there’s AI looking at your website and presenting it to a searcher.

That’s a different kind of traffic.

Or visibility.

… or traffic.

What It Means for Your Writing

The good news is that AEO-friendly writing looks a lot like just… good writing.

Clear structure.

Direct answers.

Specific information from genuine experience.

Content that actually addresses what the reader needs rather than dancing around it.

A few things help specifically:

  • Answer the question early, not at the end
  • Use clear headings that reflect what each section actually covers
  • Write in plain language that’s easy to extract and quote
  • Be specific rather than general wherever possible

You don’t need to overhaul everything you write. Or wrote. Or have written.

You just need to understand that the reader has changed.

Sometimes the reader is an AI.

Just write clearly enough for both and you should be good to go. Good luck!
