This will be a short one today because all I really want to do is drive this message: Not everything has to be SEO content.
Oooohhhh! Bad words especially ones coming from an SEO Specialist, right?
Ok, well, someone called this out recently and they weren’t wrong.
Not every writer wants to write for search engines.
Not every piece of content needs to be optimized for anything.
Sometimes writing is just… writing.
A story.
An essay.
A personal piece that exists because it needs to exist, not because a keyword tool said there was search volume for it.
That’s important.
That’s always been important.
We get so caught up in traffic acquisition and gaining more that we sometimes forget that we started writing out of the love for writing.
Somewhere in all the talk about algorithms and rankings and E-E-A-T and core updates… it’s easy to forget that.
So first: sorry for making it sound like SEO is the only thing that matters for the past few articles I’ve written here.
It isn’t.
I just got way into what I do for a living and got so excited to share the things I’ve learned, am learning, and will continue to learn as I progress in my SEO journey.
The world needs writers to tell stories. Create art by weaving phrases, sentences together. Build worlds with words.
The Trouble with SEO
SEO used to be rigid and honestly a little ugly.
Back then, there were strict requirements to succeed.
- Keyword density requirements.
- Exact-match phrases shoehorned into sentences that didn’t need them.
- Headers stuffed with search terms whether they made sense or not.
- Formatting that served crawlers instead of readers.
It was a set of rules that made good writing worse.
That version of SEO is largely dead now.
What replaced it looks a lot more like… just writing well.
Google’s own guidelines now reward content that demonstrates real experience, genuine expertise, and actual usefulness to the reader.
The March 2026 core update proved this in real time.
Sites that wrote for humans won.
Sites that wrote for algorithms lost.
The best SEO content today reads like it was never trying to be SEO content at all.
Which means if you’re already writing clearly, writing from experience, and writing for a specific reader…
You’re closer to good SEO practice than you think.
You don’t have to call it that.
You don’t have to think of yourself as an SEO writer.
Just keep writing well.
You can do it. Not everything has to be SEO.
